| Ohakune is situated
at the base of the Southern side of Mount Ruapehu adjacent to
the Tongariro World Heritage Park. Its location
provides opportunities for both summer and winter tourism, making
Ohakune unique in the North Island and potentially poised for
considerable growth.
Ohakune is a launching pad for the North Island ski industry
and also a service town for the area’s agriculture, horticulture
and forestry, which provide the foundation for economic stability.
Although the tourism industry is still largely winter based, there
is progression towards summer activities and to creating a year
round tourist experience.
The area offers numerous outdoor activities
as well as snow sports – buses depart daily for access to
the world famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing and
deliver you back to your doorstep. Also walking in the Tongariro
World Heritage Park, golfing, swimming, fishing, kayaking and
other water sports. The township of Turangi on Lake Taupo is less
than one hour by car and the township of Taupo a further 30 minutes
drive.
Ohakune’s friendly, restful and rural atmosphere,
with its recognition of cultural diversity, historical heritage
and the arts, make it a very pleasant town to visit and use as
a base for enjoying all that the Tongariro World Heritage Park
offers.
